Individual Therapy

Individual therapy provides a safe space to examine the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that may be contributing to problems in relationships, low mood, anxiety, or interfering with daily functioning. Therapy offers a systematic approach to understanding what’s driving your experience and building toward meaningful change. Therapy is not reserved for acute crisis. Many individuals engage in treatment proactively — to develop insight, improve functioning, or address patterns before they become more entrenched.

What to Expect

Sessions are 50 minutes and typically scheduled on a regular basis, with frequency adjusted as treatment progresses. The initial sessions serve an assessment function — gathering information about your presenting concerns, relevant history, and goals for treatment. You are not expected to arrive with a clear diagnosis or agenda; part of the early work is developing a shared understanding of what you’re dealing with and how to approach it.
Treatment is collaborative and evolves over time. Sessions may focus on processing recent experiences, identifying cognitive or behavioral patterns, developing coping strategies, or working through struggles rooted in earlier experiences. The approach will be informed by what you bring and what the evidence suggests is most effective for your concerns.

Common Presenting Concerns

People seek individual therapy for a wide range of reasons, including:
  • Anxiety disorders, excessive worry, or panic
  • Depression, low mood, or loss of motivation
  • Interpersonal difficulties and relationship conflict
  • Life transitions, grief, and adjustment
  • Occupational stress and burnout
  • Identity, self-worth, and personal development
  • Trauma and the lasting effects of difficult experiences
  • Eating Disorder

The Therapeutic Relationship

The empirical literature consistently identifies the therapeutic alliance as a significant predictor of treatment outcomes. Effective therapy depends on a working relationship characterized by trust, honesty, and a shared sense of purpose. If, after a few sessions, we determine that a different approach or provider would better meet your needs, I will assist with an appropriate referral.
