Group Therapy
Group therapy is a well-researched treatment modality — not a substitute for individual therapy, but an intervention with its own mechanisms of change. Under the guidance of a trained therapist, a small group of individuals meets regularly to work through shared concerns, developing insight and interpersonal skills in a way that the one-on-one therapeutic context cannot fully replicate. Availability of specific groups varies. Please inquire about current offerings and waitlists.
What to Expect
Groups typically meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes and are kept small — generally six to ten members — to allow for meaningful participation. The early sessions of any group involve establishing trust, and orienting members to the process. Over time, the group develops its a set of relationships that become therapeutically significant in their own right. Much of the work happens during structured exercises and in the interactions between members as they unfold in real time.
Who Is a Good Candidate
Individuals already engaged in individual therapy may participate in group concurrently. In many cases, this combination produces outcomes that exceed either modality alone.
Confidentiality in a Group Context
Confidentiality operates somewhat differently in a group setting. All members are expected to maintain the privacy of what is shared within the group — this is a foundational norm, reviewed explicitly at the outset and revisited as needed. While the therapist is bound by professional and legal confidentiality obligations, the group members are bound by a shared ethical commitment. This distinction will be explained in full during the pre-group consultation.
Getting Started
Individuals interested in group therapy are invited to contact the practice to inquire about current groups, upcoming cohorts, or waitlist availability. A brief phone call will be scheduled to gather preliminary information before arranging the pre-group consultation.
