Going through a divorce is a huge rollercoaster of emotions and changes for the entire family.
Although these changes may be tough, there are a few tips for you can do as a parent. Here are five tips to help make the divorce easier on the kids.
Explain It Isn’t Their Fault
No matter what age your children may be, it is important to remind them that the divorce is not their fault.
Even if they have understood it is for the best, there still may be a part of them that takes responsibility.
Keep in mind; if there is more than one child involved, not all siblings’ reactions will be the same.
Telling The Kids
When it comes to telling the kids, sooner is better than later. Kids have very good intuition, and there is a chance they may already know before you tell them.
Plus, knowing sooner will give them time to prepare for upcoming changes such as a new home or school.
Children of different ages will require more or less information.
Younger children will have a harder time comprehending the situation; while older children will have a better understanding and therefore more questions.
Answer All Their Questions
Divorce comes with a lot of change, and therefore a lot of questions. Be prepared to answer a few questions in regards to holidays, living situations and visitation schedules. Being honest and upfront can help calm any nerves.
Keep Consistent Routines
Having a steady routine is very beneficial for children.
For example, maintaining a consistent carpool schedule or bedtime routine can help things feel a little bit more normal.
Seek Help From A Professional
Keep in mind, everybody is different, therefore your family will have their own way of adjusting.
Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from a mental health professional either as a family or individually.
