Does adult-onset ADHD exist? A new study casts doubt on this diagnosis. Previous research has reported that the prevalence of this disorder in adults is 3-10 percent. Traditionally, this disorder manifests in children with onset between ages 5 to 12. Some 10 percent of children are given a diagnosis of ADHD and most grow out of it to some extent by the time they reach adulthood. And yet increasingly adults are coming forward with concerns regarding their ability to focus and concentrate. Some report a long standing history of struggle that dates back to childhood, whereas others report only minor symptoms with an increase in struggle as they reach adulthood. Since the diagnostic manual specifically identifies early onset as one of the symptoms needed for the diagnosis this puts clinicians in a dilemma.
In our practice, we do provide assessments for adults who have concerns regarding this diagnosis. They oftentimes present themselves after their children have received such a diagnosis and they see similar traits in themselves. The concerns of adulthood revolve around problems focusing, listening skills, the ability to follow through on planned behaviour, time management, organizational skills and difficulties completing tasks. These symptoms impact their ability to do their job as well as their relationship with family members. With adults, however, making the diagnosis is much more complicated. Adults generally have found compensatory strategies that might mask the problem but also living with such struggles contributes to other problems such as depression, anxiety, addictions etc. In addition, anxiety and depression might also be the underlying problem contributing to difficulties focusing and completing tasks.
If you have concerns in this area, it is important to not only look at the symptoms of ADHD but also other areas, including emotional functioning. A thorough evaluation by a psychologist will help in this regard.
